HenriettaMatilda Crompton was born on 23 December 1793, the fifth daughter of the ninesurviving children of Maria and Joshua Crompton. The family properties includedEsholt Hall estate (near Bradford) and Micklegate House in York, whereHenrietta and two of her sisters lived for most of their lives.  The surviving papers of Henrietta and hersiblings, a selection of which are transcribed in this volume, offer a charmingpicture of genteel provincial life in the early nineteenth century.
