Alexander Fothergill (1709-1788) surveyor, attorney, farmer and diarist, was a member of the fourth generation of a Quaker family who lived at Carr End in Raydale, Wensleydale. In 1751 he was appointed surveyor for the turnpike road. These surviving sections of his diary are a unique record, providing details on everything from the fixing of turnpike gates to the appointment of barkeepers
