Robert Hird [1768-1841] was a shoemaker in Bedale and lived there all his life. In about 1808 he began to write a history of his town and continued until shortly before his death in 1841.  His work provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into early nineteenth-century life in a Yorkshire town from the perspective of a tradesman. Hird wrote his Annals in verse form, supplemented by copious notes and transcriptions of various documents. The text in this publication is accompanied by drawings depicting scenes and buildings in Bedale.
