WilliamChaytor inherited the Croft estate in the 1660s, but after struggling withdebts for many years he was eventually thrown into Fleet Prison in London.  He spent nearly 20 years in the Fleet,managing his estates from the prison, and died there in 1721. Although Chaytorwas of no importance in national affairs, this selection of his personalpapers, which includes letters, court cases, wills and accounts, are a mine ofinformation on the economy and society of late seventeenth and earlyeighteenth-century England.
