At 11am every Thursday, the Bellman of Ripon will ring his bell in the Market Place to announce that the Market is open. This tradition dates back many years when a 'Corn Tax' was in place.

Jean Edwards adds by email [2007]:
My great-great-great grandfather John Gregg was Bellman from 1853 until his death in 1852. He was succeeded by his son-in-law, my great-great grandfather James Flinn.
