A picture of Hannah Hauxwell taken in September 1966. Hannah later achieved celebrity status after appearing on a television documentary. She lived alone in Low Birk Hatt Farm at Cotherstone, overlooking Blackton Reservoir. She had no electricity or running water and lived on a meagre existence. Mrs V Freeman of Harrogate remembers [2003]: Hannah Hauxwell used to come down from her farm to the bus stop, at the village of Lartington, sometimes with her mother, to go shopping at Barnard Castle. This is a memory of her before she became famous and before she moved to Cotherstone. Photography by Bertram Unné.
