Lewis Outing emails [2006/7]:This was my grandfather's sheep-skin works, located on the Waterside, Knaresborough. His name was James Mason. After his death in 1956, the business was run by my mother until its closure in 1965.Edwin Mitchell is pictured in the photograph.After being stretched out, an alum mixture was applied to the skins. This took one layer of the skin away (it is shown on the floor), making the skin into leather. Depending on the thickness of the skins, approximately ten could be treated in this way in one day
