Before World War I the channel fleet was a squadron of warships based on the south coast to defend the the English Channel. Several courtesy visits to Scarborough were made by ships of the fleet when the town entertained the crews. In 1906, Scarborough Tennis Club played a challenge match against officers from five of the ships. Both teams posed for this photograph at Oriel Crescent, Scarborough on 27th July 1906.
