The Memorandum Book of Richard Cholmeley of Brandsby 1602-1623
Richard Cholmeley inherited his estate at Brandsby in 1602 and soon after began to record notes about the administration of his property, the hiring of his servants, the letting of his farms, his personal and household expenses and his legal disputes. Cholmeley was also a Catholic and wrote his book at a time when the anti-Catholic laws were enforced with the greatest vigour. His notes and observations, transcribed in full in this volume, represent a rare survival of early seventeenth-century life and reveal the wide interests and enthusiasms of a Yorkshire recusant gentleman.
